6-05-07 - Please be aware of the new Wisconsin Booster Seat Law! The new law going into effect in Wisconsin on
June 1, 2006 (with a six month citation grace period) requires that drivers must
ensure that children ages 4 to 8 who weigh less than 80 pounds and are less than
4 feet 9 inches tall are required to be in a seatbelted booster seat. Children
ages 4 to 8 who exceed the height and weight levels would need only to be
restrained in a seatbelt in the back seat. This applies to public, for-profit,
and non-profit sectors, as well as private individuals. All drivers of children
in their vehicles are responsible for compliance. If your daughter fits the
above criteria and is carpooling or attending a council event that includes
transportation, she will need to bring a booster seat. (Note: Buses are exempt
because they currently are not required to have seatbelts.) Please remember that
Safety-Wise specifies that girls under 12 years of age should sit in the back
seat “whenever possible” due to airbag deployment risks. Some vehicles
specify front seat requirements on the passenger visor, and all car seat and
booster seat instructions should indicate where the seat should be properly
installed (i.e., front or back seat). In short...car seat until
age 4, booster seat until age 8, always belted, always in the back seat! _______________________________________________________________________
