In 1932, Virginia Marley and Midge Meyer, two Girl Scouts baked cookies in the Philadelphia Gas & Electric Company's window as part of a community fundraising campaign for local daycare nurseries. The legend is that passers-by asked to buy the cookies and that is how the Girl Scout cookie program activity got started! The tradition continues today with girls donating their cookie proceeds to charities in their communities. This annual event is the largest fundraiser for troops as well as the council. It is a girl-oriented activity that encourages skills that girls can develop and use throughout their life, such as: handling money, making sales, providing customer service, developing self-confidence, interpersonal communication and etc. Adults can help girls make the most of the program by doing the following:
